The Ornithological Society of Gotland
– birds, conservation and bird watching on the island of Gotland

The Ornithological Society of Gotland (GOF) main aims are to educate the public of the avifauna and to preserve a rich bird-life, on the island of Gotland. We offer excursions, indoor events and publish the journal Bläcku, which of course focus on the avifauna on Gotland. Bläcku is Gotlandish (a Swedish dialect) for Lapwing, which is the symbol of our society. GOF is a regional affiliation of the Ornithological Society of Sweden (SOF) also known as BirdLife Sweden.

Gotland
The island is situated in the middle of the Baltic Sea. The largest city on the island is Visby, famous for its old buildings and its city wall (which is between 800 and 900 years old). On the island, you will be at one of the best nature locations in Sweden, especially for birds. Besides the extraordinary breeding populations of for example collared flycatcher, barred warbler and white tailed eagle, the island offers a relaxing opprotunity to undisturbed enjoy the magnificent nature. The only bird cliffs in the Baltic Sea are found here, on two small island outside the west coast, Stora and Lilla Karlsö, with thousands of auks, gulls and cormorants.

If you have any questions regarding birds and bird watching do not hesitate to contact us.

Welcome to the island of birds, welcome to Gotland,
GOF
